The Lions are reportedly set to offer a promising Western Province talent the chance to get more game time in Johannesburg.
The Lions narrowly missed out on the top eight of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship last season and are looking to significantly strengthen their squad, having already added four new names to the roster.
According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Lions head coach Ivan van Rooyen wants to offer Western Province and Stormers flyhalf Kade Wolhuter the chance to make a fresh start at Ellis Park.
Wolhuter is currently recovering from a knee ligament injury suffered in a freak training accident in April. The initial prognosis was the injury would keep him out for around nine months, which means he is not expected to return before the end of the year.
The former Paul Roos prodigy made his Stormers debut in 2021, but suffered the first of his two knee ligament injuries in the Rainbow Cup.
It has been reported that the Lions are fully prepared to walk a difficult road to get Wolhuter back to full fitness.
The Lions are also keen to add another flyhalf to their squad. Jordan Hendrikse and Gianni Lombard shared the responsibility last season, while Zander du Plessis has arrived on a permanent deal after spending the previous season on loan.
However, Hendrikse has been linked with a move away from the Lions and that could open up a space in the squad for Wolhuter.
